The Rivers state police command says it has arrested 69 persons in connection to the communal clash between the Hausa and IRIEBE community which broke out on Wednesday the 25th of April behind the famous school to land ‘an agricultural settlement designed by the rivers state government to promote agricultural productivity of the state
The police public relation officer Nnamdi Omoni in an interview with our correspondent said the commissioner of police in Rivers state Usman Belel led his management team to the scene of the incident to detriment the level of carnage and damage done and would soon come out full investigation to the public.
He said preliminary investigation reveals that some hoodlums attacked the Hausa community resident in Iriebe and the ugly incident led to the death of two police officers one inspector and a sergeant, with two civilian deaths. In all we lost four persons contrary to the speculation that over 20 persons died in the clashes
Omoni said normalcy has been restored to the area and urged fleeing residents to returns to their homes.
The police PRO also revealed that sixty-nine civilians were arrested and about eleven police officers have also been arrested for act of cowardice for taking to flight instead quelling the matter, he said the officers in question are making statements and will be tried in the police routine orderly room trial and whatever the outcome we will still let the public know.
Meanwhile a chieftain of the Iriebe community and the eldest man Charles Eleto told our correspondent that Iriebe community does not have any known issues with the Hausa community and urge those fanning the embers of war to desist from such evil act. He said our community have lived in peace with the Hausa for years and we have no problem with them, I learnt that the issues were between the AkwaIbom youths and the Hausa community but unfortunately we lost one of our Iriebe youth who went to join in the senseless fight.
