Social Media Influencer Busted by Rivers Police Command Over Fake News Published


Rivers state police command has arrested a social media influencer, who specializes in generating and disseminating fake news stories

The Suspect Onyeche Igwe, whose recent report was about a building at Rumuokwuta being used as a criminal hideout confessed to the crime saying he was misinformed and apologized to the public for circulating fake information.

One of his victims and the owner of the said building circulating online Obuah Oha said the suspect was their tenant who has refused to pay seven month rents owed his father.

He said the suspects instead of paying the rent absconded and generated an online fake information that their house is some criminal hideouts for kidnapping putting the tenants in the compound up against the security forces.

Meanwhile the state police public relation officer Nnamdi Omoni described the arrest of the internet fraudster as a major breakthrough.

He told East west reporters that the command has been battling circulation of fake information which paints police in bad light. He said few days ago ‘’ I did a press release warning that the command will fish out those involved in this cybercrime of demarketing the police command as been docile and complacent about the security situation in the state.

Meanwhile a press release from the command reads ‘’The Rivers State Police Command is pleased to inform the public that, it has arrested one Igwe Onyeche Wofuru ‘M’ 38years from Egbeda in Emohua L.G.A of Rivers State, whose syndicate has consistently peddled fake news and false security reports, thereby creating unnecessary panic and tension in the State.

 The suspect who claims to be an online journalist, was arrested on 26/4/19 at about 2000hrs by Men of the Rumuepirikom (kala) Police Station, acting on credible information.

 2. ​Recall that in recent time, the Command has had to contend with ​embarrassing Reports on the increased Criminal activities in the State ​among other damaging stories.

 The suspect, a member of the syndicate carrying out “smear   campaigns” against the Command, confessed to be responsible for a recent online Publication, alleging that a certain building in Rumuokwuta was being used to commit various acts of criminality, including rape, kidnapping ​and armed robbery and called on the Police to storm and demolish the building.  An act which he knows to be false and does not believe in its existence. But only intended to set the Police against the landlord and his tenants, thereby subjecting them and to malicious arrest and prosecution, to satisfy his evil and selfish motive.

3. ​The suspect has made useful confessions and will be charged to court as soon as the Investigation is over. Meanwhile efforts are on to arrest other members of the syndicate.
