The public complaints commission has called on the state and local government areas in the state to be proactive in the issues and management of flooding in some places in the state.
The Rivers State Federal Commissioner, Marshall Israel made the call when led members of his team to a courtesy visit the Zonal office of the National Emergency management Agency in port Harcourt
He said there’s need for all tiers of government and multinational companies to join hand in responding to victims of flood disaster
He explains that when people are homeless as a result of flooding, they need basic amenities like food, shelter, clothing, mattresses. Pillows. Mosquitoes etc. to stay stable, if this basic thing are not provided where lies our humanity?
So we came to find out how prepared NEMA is and what they are doing? We also call on multinational companies to join hands to put smiles on the faces of flood victims.
He said at Public Complaints Commission our services are free and like I told the NEMA boss, in case they are short staffed during these emergencies, we are ready to support them with man power free of charge. All they need to do is to train some of our staff on emergency procedures so they can be of help during the expected flooding season.
For his part, the zonal director of NEMA Walson Brandon called on residents who are affected by flooding in the zone to identify high ground and comply with the necessary emergency procedures.
He said we have been carrying out sensitization in these Local Government Areas, we have gone from Community to Community to sensitize them on what is expected of them, which is if see the flooding coming, lift valuable items on top of something very high and locate the nearest higher ground or the IDP camps for shelter,
