Passengers on board an Air Peace Boeing 737-500 aircraft on Saturday afternoon were full of praises to God for saving them and the crew from what they described as great Miracle as the plane skidded off the Port Harcourt International Airport runway upon landing.
The Abuja-Port Harcourt flight was reported to have taken off from Abuja and arrived at its destination at 3.42pm.
The Chief Operating Officer of Air Peace, Mrs Toyin Olajide, confirmed the incident, saying that it was due to poor weather and flooding on the airport’s runway. She said, “We confirm that Air Peace Flight P47291 Abuja-Port Harcourt had a runway excursion upon landing at the Port Harcourt International Airport on June 22 due to heavy downpour. Our professional crew quickly recovered within seconds of the incident and the aircraft was successfully normalized.
“Our esteemed passengers on board the flight was calm during the incident and disembarked normally. Our team of experts and the authorities are currently reviewing the incident and we will give our cooperation for a thorough exercise.”
While apologizing to the affected passengers for the inconveniences caused them, said the airline would continue to priorities safety.
The General Manager, Corporate Affairs of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu, who also confirmed the incident, said the aircraft skidded off the runway but the pilot was able to control the situation by putting the equipment to a stop as the undercarriage did not sink into the soil.
“No one was injured,” she added.
The General Manager, Public Affairs, Accident Investigation Bureau, Mr. Tunji Oketunbi, said the agency had been notified about the incident. He said, there were 94 passengers and six crew members on board.
“The aircraft skidded off the Runway to the left about 1300m from the Runway 21 threshold at the Port Harcourt International Airport. All passengers and crew have been evacuated safely. Accident Investigation Bureau has dispatched investigators who are on their way to the site,”
