Report reaching us has it that the protracted communal war between neighboring communities in Gokana Local Government Area in Rivers state. LEWE and BOMU was ignited yesterday with LEWE Community claiming that BOMU first fired gunshot into their community and they retaliated.
A source in Lewe community said they gunshots were fired by men dressed in military uniform whom they identified as well known indigenes of BOMU.
He said the suspected cultist dressed in military uniform shot sporadically into the air and the bullet hit some local people were going about their normal business before some other cultist from LEWE fired shots at them and into BOMU before the assailants took off.
He confirmed them both communities suffered causalities as so many people sustained gunshot injuries but refused to be taken to the hospital so as not to be mistaken for cultist by the doctors when they hospital eventually treat them.
Meanwhile the Rivers state police command has confirmed the communal clash in LEWE and BOMU which they said they had restored normalcy.
The police public relation officer Nnamdi Omoni Said the timely intervention of the police brought calm to the area.
He explained that the police on getting there the hoodlums took to flight and the police carried on of the victims who sustained gunshot wounds to the hospital.
He said the police is positioned in the community to ensure that there won’t be any reprisals or further attack and insisted that no body died but that some reportedly were inflicted with gunshots injuries but fled the scene with the wounds while the only person rescued by police with gunshot injury is receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital
