As a way to ensure that peace is achieved in Rivers state, Members of warring cult groups in Alakahia Community in Akpor Kingdom in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State have denounced membership of their former cult groups.
Our correspondent who was at the scene of the peace initiative reports that the Alakahia repentant cult members gathered at the community playground in the presence of representative of Security agencies, council of chiefs and elders including women and other stakeholders to denounced cultism.
Some of the repentant cult members who spoke at the event recounted how they were lured into cultism by the activities of some community leaders and community chieftaincy tussle.
The repentant cultists while calling on all aggrieved youths in the area to sheath their swords and be united, they also want the chiefs and community leaders to learn to do the right things for the development of the youths just as they call on government to intervene to end the root cause of youth restiveness, land grabbing by some powerful few and other problems in their communities.
Addressing the gathering, the Paramount rulers of Alakahia Community in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Eze DANIEL OGBONDAH-DODO assured the repentant cultist that himself and his council of chiefs have forgiven the youths who have genuinely denounced cultism.
Eze OGBONDAH-DODO while responding to some comments by the youths on peacemaking, clarified that the event was youth denouncement of their cult activities, saying that he was ready to make peace with any aggrieved youths who he said must come openly with their grievances.
The Alakahia Monarch encouraged the youths to sheath their swords, warning that those who would not want the peace of the community will not also have peace. He promised that himself and his cabinet members will ensure that peace will continue to reign in and around Alakahia community.
Earlier, in their messages, the chairman of peace and reconciliation committee, CHISA AWURI, said the move was for the peace and development of Alakahia community, saying that development can only strive in a peaceful atmosphere.
On his part, the Choba Police Area Commander, PATRICK who spoke on behalf of representatives of Security agencies expressed happiness over the decision of the youths to embrace peace but advised the repentant cultists never to go back to their former lives but help in the development of the community. He warned the repentant cultist not to go back to their former ways as anyone who goes against the peace resolve as agreed by the community will be dealt with according to the laws of the country
Our correspondent also reports that the Alakahia repentant cultists were made to sign a paper containing conditions of denouncing cultism which included if return to cultism will be arrested and prosecuted while members of the public will henceforth restrain from referring to them as cultists.
