Residents of OYIBO LGA in the wee hours of Monday fled their homes in what they describe as cultist invasion of their homes by yet to be identified cult group.
Confirming the incident, the Member Representing Oyigbo at the Rivers State House of Assembly PROMISE NWANKWO condemned the attack which he alleged was carried out by some hoodlums from the Ogoni axis on residents of Azuogu, Omarihu and Obete communities in Oyigbo.
PROMISE NWANKWO while addressing newsmen in port Harcourt said the incident happened at the early hours of Monday.
He said ‘’about three lives were lost after the hoodlums attacked the communities and injured several persons with machetes wounds receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital
PROMISE NWANKWO also called for more security presence in Oyigbo local government. He said ‘’the people of Oyibo are suffering due to the poor nature of access road and then to add killing to their daily ordeal is unimaginable’’.
Meanwhile, a youth leader in Oyigbo, EJIKE DIKE said the residents of Azuogu, Omarihu and Obete communities in Oyigbo have fled their area after the attack.
He said people are yet to return to their homes fearing that the boys have taken siege of the communities with the hope of camping and hibernating in their homes to continue to strike Ogoni villages using their homes/villages as their base to carry out nefarious activities.
Ejike Dike also called on the Rivers State government to intervene in the situation.
The rivers state police command however said only one person was killed in the incident.
The public relation officer of the state police command Nnamdi Omoni who confirmed the incident to our correspondent said the command is aware of the invasion and has dispatch men to dislodge the criminals from the communities.
