The Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt has granted bail to 36 persons arrested over alleged assault on members of the Taskforce on Illegal Street Trading and Motor parks on September 14 at the Rumuokoro axis in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The accused persons arrested after the incident were 100 in all but only 36 of them were brought to court, others we gathered had bailed themselves through the back door. The task-force chairman Bright Amewhule had on live program said the persons arrested after attacking the taskforce at Rumuokoro axis of port Harcourt for blocking their ‘’chopping’s’’ took cover in an undisclosed building around that area and was hibernating before police raided the place and apprehend the suspects for assaulting members of Taskforce on illegal street trading
The 36 persons were initially arraigned in court by the Taskforce on Illegal Street Trading and Motor parks the on Monday 16 September in Port Harcourt but was remanded in prison custody pending Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) advice.
The suspects during their arraignment pleaded not guilty to the three count charge.
The Chief Magistrate M.O.Chukwu while ruling on the bail application applied by the 36 accused persons granted them bail with one surety in like sum of 200 thousand naira.
The Magistrate also adjourned the case to 16 October,2019 for hearing.
Some of the persons released on bail told our correspondent that they were at a particular building around the area some cutting their hair at the barbing salon others buying and selling when police stormed the place in a commando style and arrested everybody on sight including shop owners.
