A mild drama ensued yesterday at a port Harcourt high court when the self-confessed serial killer Gracious David West threatened Journalist not to take pictures of him and warned that he would smash the phone of anyone who does so on the floor.
More drama continued inside the court room when the Suspected serial killer, GRACIOUS DAVID WEST pleaded guilty to nine count murder charges out of ten read before him at a High Court sitting in Port Harcourt.
The trial of the Suspect started before justice Adolphus Enebeli of port Harcourt high court murder on charges bordering on murder and attempted murder of several women in Rivers State.
As the charges was read the suspect interrupted the judge by telling that he is not free as legs are bound with leg cuffs which will not allow him to talk freely and his request was granted as the judge ordered that the leg cuffs be removed.
The second interruption came not long after the suspect told the Judge that the police took his wrist watch, his chain and #60,000 naira he had with him when he was arrested and had refused to give him his money and asked that the Judge should other the police to return the cash to him.
GRACIOUS DAVID-WEST is alleged to have unlawfully killed several women in different hotels and Guest houses in parts of Rivers State which is punishable offence under section 319 sub one cap 37 volume 2 laws of state 1999.
Our correspondent reports that after the charges were read and plea taken, Rivers State Government through the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice ZACCHAEUS ADANGOR applied to take over the prosecution of the matter which was not opposed by the parties.
The trail Judge Justice ADOLPHUS ENEBELI after listening to the argument first entered non guilty plea to the suspect which he proved in the session of the criminal code of the law of federal government and state respectively and thereafter granted the application of Rivers State Government to take over the matter.
Justice ADOLPHUS ENEBELI expressed readiness to give a speedy hearing of the case and thereafter adjourned till 18th, 21, 27 of Novermber2019 for continuation of trial.
The court adjourned till, 18,21th, 27th and 29th of November and 4th of December 2019 for hearing and ordered that the suspect be remanded in prison custody.
The Police Persecution Counsel, SP GLADYS IMEGU narrated what transpired in court, disclosing where Rivers State government drive their power to take over the matter.
CHIDI BONIFACE EKE who stood in for the Attorney General of the state stated that the Rivers State government is interested in the prosecution of the case.
Counsel to the accused, VINCENT CHUKWU told newsmen that the reasons why the court entered no guilty plea for his client is because a suspect is presumed innocent until proved otherwise in court and expressed his readiness to defend the accused in the matter to a logical conclusion.
