3 men who were allegedly arrested by the Rivers state police command by the men of Eagle crack Police unit in Diobu have reported of allege brutality by the police on trump up charges.
the three young men Solomon Cletus, Michael Ilekima and Opuwari Bibobra told our correspondent that men of the Eagle crack team used Machetes to cut them and hot iron on them to force them to accept crime they never committed.
The suspect said they were in front of their compound at Manilla street when the police came and asked them to lie down. They handcuffed them and took them to their station and used machete on them telling them to confess that they are kidnappers. They were released on Thursday 17 October two days after their arrest.
They said they were only released when a call came from Abuja courtesy a lawyer to one of them.
the victims have also been treated and discharged from Rivers State University Teaching Hospital
meanwhile human rights defenders CIVIL RIGHTS COUNCIL has condemned the act of using weapon to extract confession from a suspect.
reports say the Police Officers from Eagle crack (Commissioner Squad) Police unit who used machetes on Opuwari bibobra Cletus Solomon and Ikeji Michael Illekime are seriously under heat as the Officers have sent people three times since yesterday to plead with the victims to forgive them, promising to pay the hospital bills and take care of other expenses but the victims’ lawyer has refused that they should meet in court. saying ‘’we wish to see a society where citizen’s will seek redress for human right abuses against them by security agencies.
Lawyer to the 3 victims of the police brutality who wishes not to be named since the matter is already in court said Eagle crack (Commissioner Squad) Police unit have become so notorious that they take installment payment for bail. He said not until the parents and guardian of suspect /innocent person finish the installment payment before the person will be released. They also collect 500 naira from persons who came to give their person who are in custody food. Most worrisome is that this Eagle crack is only answerable to Commissioner of Police and also supervised by him only. He added’’
Reactions have continued to trail the alleged use of Machetes by Eagle Crack (Commissioner Squad) Police Unit in Rivers on suspects for confession. The National Coordinator of Civil Rights Council Arochukwu Paul Ogbonna(Esq) in an interview with National Network Newspaper condemned the act. He explained that the “Anti-Torture Act ” of 2017 signed by Muhammadu Buhari makes a comprehensive provision for penalizing the acts of torture and other cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment or punishment, and prescribes penalties for the commission of such acts.
