Ministry of water resources has appealed to state governors to emulate President Muhammadu Buhari and sign executive orders to end open defecation by year 2025.
The Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, in a keynote address at the 26th regular meeting of the National Council on Water Resources in Minna, Niger State, explained on the needs the 36 states and 744 local government areas to determine the success of the campaign against open defecation by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Adamu said it was necessary because majority of the people did not live in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, but in the states and local government areas.
“All states have to key into this target of open defecation elimination by year 2025. The governors have to sign the executive order in their states just as President Buhari did so as to address the menace.
“The Executive Order against Open Defecation by Mr President cannot work without the involvement of both states and local governments in the country. The Federal Government will also need the involvement of community leaders, religious leaders, market women,” he said.
Also Speaking to newsmen, the Niger State Governor, Abubakar Bello, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Ahmed Matane, commended the ministry for organizing the programme, describing the timing as apt. he called on stakeholders to join the ministry to end open defecation
