A 2018 Demographic health survey conducted by national population commission shows that Rivers state has the highest number of women that patronize traditional birth attendant instead of using the hospitals.
The federal commissioner of public complaints commission Ipalibo Harry stated this at the official launch of 2018 Nigeria Demographic and health survey reports.
He said the maternal death ratio in Nigeria is 502 per 1000 women of which rivers state topped the chart.
Ipalibo Harry said the study also looked at health indicators of men and women across the 36 states using an innovative anthropometry processes. He said the processes helped with improved data collection of high quality of height and weight measurement from children and women
Also speaking at the Training and launch of the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey Report, the national team lead and state coordinator of national demographic health survey Christy ELIBE revealed that Rivers state has the lowest rate of sickle cell anemia in the country.
She said genotype testing was carried out in a subsample of more than 11,000 children of which 20% have sickle cell traits, the overall sickle cell disease in Nigeria children ages 6- 59 months is 1.3& with the prevalence of sickle cell disease is above 2.0% in six states, namely Osun,2.6% OYO,2.8%, LAGOS 2.7%, KANO 2.4%, KOGI 2.4%, and TARABA 2.2%
She called on health practitioners and stakeholders in the health sector in rivers state to continue with advocacies and sensitization to keep the sickle cell diseases low and permanently eradicated from the state.
