A two days workshop on gender equality and safety /gender sensitive reporting held at the NUJ press center port Harcourt has ended with lots of memories and social impact on women journalist in rivers state.
the training which began on Monday in partnership with Norwegian journalist union to educate women on safety issues and how to handle sexual harassment in the work place also equipped the participants on how to handle intimidation, stereotyping and how to cover protests and warlike situations in all elections in the country.
the state chairperson of Nigeria association of women Journalist NAWOJ, LILIAN OKONKWO OGABU in her welcome address said women are taking the lead across and making impact across the globe, which the Nigeria women are not left aside. she said the aim of the training workshop is to ensure that Nigeria women breaks barriers and the need to recognize certain challenges they encounter on a daily basis and how to tackle them using best practices. speaking at the opening ceremony, chairman of the occasion MD of COKSERVE CHIDI OKOROH called on Nigerians to emulate countries like Australia where women take the lead in the struggle for gender equality as it has reflected in sports where female and male football clubs of the national team are entitled to equal pay
He said to ensure this reflect in Nigeria society , advocacy at all levels should be continuous and that’s where journalism comes in to bridge the gap,
he added that women are interested in what men are interested in, they are concerned about the things men are concerned about, they write on subjects men read about, therefore it is of grave importance for both gender not to be left in the gender based stereotypes and avoid any separation on gender lines as regards who write about what.
he said all journalist , male and female alike can play a role in changing the narratives of gender based stereotypes.
in his address the permanent secretary ministry of Information PUALINUS NSIRIM called on women journalist in the state to play a critical role as regards to inequality in the society.
he said NAWOJ who celebrated 30 years some weeks back, but has no data to show that this is what it has achieved in terms of advocacy and things achieved so far and what the next 100 years would look like. he challenged NAWOJ ON Agenda Setting for the country and asked but how much agenda setting has nawoj as body presented a data to Nigeria in terms of what they really want and how it can achieves them
he said he expects the Nawoj To champion on why women are used as sexual objects for music video, where the man singing is well covered up while the women dancing are almost naked or semi- nude
Also speaking at the event is the house committee chairman on Information, Hon. Enemi George eulogized women who are making positive impacts in various field.
he said when women take their place men fall back in line.
