Pensioners in Nigeria is appealing to Federal government to approve free medical treatment and other welfare packages for pensioners who are 70 years and above.
The national president of pensioners ABEL AFOLAYAN in an address read to the pensioners, said retires are experiencing untold hardship, pains and tears while waiting endlessly to collect pension or access government facilities.
He appealed to state governors to address issues affecting pensioners with urgent attention that some pensioners still earn as little as 2000 naira monthly due federal government refusal review monthly allowance
For his part the state Chairman of Nigeria union of pensioners COLLINS NWANKWO said pensioners in Rivers state are demanding for payment of outstanding initial arrears, backlog of pension Gratuities and payments of death benefits to families of the deceased pensioners
Some pensioners at the sideline of the event expressed sadness that pension allowances are not paid as at when due, they said federal government inability to review pension is affecting their purchasing power, they said pension was last reviewed in 2010.
They also told our correspondent that there was nothing to celebrate about begin a pensioner in Nigeria. Mr Ekpo timothy said I am not happy what is there to celebrate I have been on 2500 monthly allowance since I retired 22 years ago, people who retired after us are earning so much, and we built the government they are enjoying today.
Abel Thankgod said if I talk what is in my heart, they will say its hate speech so I am not happy. And for 68 years old Okpakubo Brown said its really unfortunate that at an event like this no government official came out to grace the occasion.
