The senior staff association of electricity and allied Company union has expressed fears that the planned increase in electricity tariff might lead to increased attacks on electricity workers who are made to collect revenue from angry consumers.

The assistant General secretary of senior staff association of electricity and allied Company union, Innocent Douglas describes the hike as a witch hunt to electricity workers who already suffering various degrees of assault from angry consumers.

He said the electricity hike will only increase the attacks and our fear is that if they asked them to go and collect bills. This same staff who have never enjoyed salary increments for the past five years, would be sent to collect the bills from angry consumers and your guess is as good as mine what customers can do when you asked them to pay for light they are not seeing or using.

Mr. Lord-Douglas explained that federal government approach to electricity tariff is faulty. ‘’National electricity regulation commission is putting the cart before the horse. They should have ensured that they increase power generation and distribution before hiking price, on what basis are they increasing tariff? For the poor epileptic power supply? Businesses are winding down every day due to poor power supply and the regulatory body that would ensure that there is steady power supply is busy with increasing tariff, I think that’s a misnomer’’

The assistant General secretary of senior Staff association of Electricity and allied Company Union Innocent Lord-Douglas also berated federal government for being insensitive to the public outcry over the hardship faced by its citizens and called on civil societies organizations and private individuals to challenge the electricity tariff in court.
