President Mohammed Buhari has directed traditional rulers in the Niger Delta Region to get a data base of young indigenes involved in the kpofire activities for considerations of licenses to operate a modular refinery.
Kpofire is the local parlance for illegally refined petroleum products sold in Rivers State and its environs, experts say kerosene from kpofire sold to private individuals for use at home for cooking have replaced the government refined kerosene sold at most filling station who no longer sold the products. President Buhari, represented by the minister for State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor gave the directive at the commissioning of a scientific laboratory of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response in Port Harcourt.
President Buhari said this is to mitigate the soot conditions in Rivers State and also end the menace of pipeline vandalism and illegal refinery in the region.
President Mohammed Buhari also directed HYPREP to make use of the newly commissioned scientific laboratory of Nosdra in its remediation in Ogoniland.
Correspondent Precious Ahiakwo reports that the Rivers state governor Nyesom Wike represented by his Deputy Dr. Ipalibo Banigo-Harry at the event asked the federal government to accelerate plans to establish a modular refinery in the region.
The Rivers state governor also asked the federal government to compel oil multinationals in the region to have a remote detection centre so as to detect pipeline vandalism and oil spill.
