Civil Rights Council Condemns Arrest Of 17 Female Sex Workers Putting On Pants & Bra With 12 Male Patronizers By Mile One Police

Police authority from the mile one axis at 8pm on Monday night raided a brothel the Honey Moon Brothel located at 49 Ojoto street close to Ojoto/Azikiwe round about Mile 2 diobu Port Harcourt and arrested 17 female sex workers and 12 male patronizers.

An eye witness told our correspondent that who called our correspondent to inform them of the raid said Police were dragging girls on pant and bra inside six patrol vans of operation sting and a jeep.

After the raid the hotel manager who was approached for comment refused to speak on the matter but we gathered that the manager does not want to speak on the matter because they might be involved in shady dealings.

Another worker at the hotel confirmed to us that girls arrested were between ages 15 to 17 while parading themselves to attract customers putting on only pants and bra working as commercial sex workers.

We also gather that Police carry out raids in the brothels around the area when the brothel management has not complied with relevant agreement with police for the month.

However, Human Rights Organisation Civil Rights Council have raised concern over the attitude of police in arresting sex workers naked.

Chairman of civil rights council prince WIRO said while the police have the rights to arrest sex workers on responsible suspicion but arresting ladies putting on only pants no bra.  Negates the principle of life of dignity the way the ladies were arrested naked.

Spokesperson of Rivers State Police command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni was also notified of the development. Urging to educate men under his command that “Sex Workers” also have dignity and rights.

We gathered that the raid yesterday by the Police was because the brothel has not given them ‘roger’ for the month.  As the information filtered in this morning indicates that all arrested persons are back after the security agents collected the agreed money.

the law does not empower the Police to arrest them without allowing them to wear clothes. They must put on clothes before they will be arrested if at all they have committed a crime.
