The Civil Rights Council is calling on the Rivers State Security Council, Rivers State Government and authorities of the Nigerian Army to investigate the alleged physical assault by one Staff Sergeant BJ Lazarus of the Nigerian Army on Ikechukwu Wordu a member of Emohua Local Government Area Covid-19 restriction order monitoring team.

A statement jointly signed by state chairman of Civil Rights Council Prince Wiro and Secretary Uzoma Kelechi said the council is highly disturbed by reports that the member of Nigerian Army left his duty post at a farm in Egbeda and relocated to boundary between Ubimini in Rivers State and Awara in Imo state to illegally aide passage of vehicles from Imo State into Rivers State in flagrant disregard to order by the Rivers State Government restricting movement in and out of Rivers State which took effect from 6pm on March 26th 2020.

The statement said the Council is also shocked to see photos purported to be that of the member of Nigerian Army holding Comrade Wordu on his shirt in what seems like an attempt to intimidate and stop members of the Covid19 compliance monitoring team from carrying out their legitimate duty.

‘’CRC calls on the Authorities of the Nigerian Army to urgently swing into action in order to prevent further assault and molestation of members of the public who may suffer in the hands of the said personnel who seems to have abandoned his area of primary assignment’’.

The Council on its part will employ options within the confines of the law to ensure Justice is served to all parties involved in the matter.
