Rivers State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike today received Director-General of the Nigerian Center of Disease Control, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu on a working visit to the state.

He applauded the Rivers State Government for the “excellent work done in Rivers” as Rivers is now an example to the rest of the country.

Speaking on life after the lockdowns from COVID-19 Dr Chikwe said things would not go back to normal and people wouldn’t be able to interact freely until a vaccine is produced for Covid-19. He urged for focus to be given to the Public Health system as an insurance against health emergencies like the present pandemic.

Responding the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Professor Princewill Chike who spoke on behalf of the State Government gave a review of the steps and actions the state’s health team has taken since the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic. He said this was the second visit of the NCDC DG to Rivers State as his first visit was for the setting up of the State’s Public Health Emergency Operations Center.

He explained that the state’s health team has been able to train and enlighten health workers across the state. In addition to the isolation and treatment centers in the state the state’s Secondary Healthcare Centers have also gotten functioning holding centers.

In addition to the two Covid-19 cases that have been successfully treated in the state he explained that a total of 214 people were placed under surveillance with the last two of the people under surveillance set to leave the surveillance net by tomorrow.

He requested for the NCDC to speed up action in setting up a testing center in Rivers State.
