As schools sets to resume seven months after shut down due to the pandemic, students of community secondary school Oginigba Rivers will be smiling into a newly built block of classrooms built by Ambassador FBI Porbeni through the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt.
President of Rotary club of Port Harcourt, Adeolu Okanlawon at the commissioning of the block of four classrooms and a staff room, said the initiative is part of Rotary International focus on issues of Basic Education and Literacy.
He said “ this event is in furtherance of the passion to serve humanity and fulfill the Rotary International Vision of “Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves”.
President of Rotary club of Port Harcourt, Adeolu Okanlawon further appealed that “For the building to serve its purpose of becoming a classroom, we need chairs and desks for both students and teachers, educational boards and other teaching accessories. It is therefore time again for us to roll our sleeves, identify and appeal to men and women of goodwill who will join us to donate treasures, network and talent in making this a reality. For only then can we indeed say, “we have crossed the huddle”.
Rotarian Adeolu Okanlawon however appreciation the Benefactor, His Excellency, Ambassador FBI Porbeni mni CFR for his magnanimity and tenacity in following through on his promise concerning this project, “to Rotarian Chinyere Nwoga for her support, to PAG Georgiana Ngeri-Nwagha for her love for the students of Oginigba Community Secondary School, Past President Francis Murray-Bruce for his support, Past Presidents Adaure Odu, Lucky Akhiwu, Dan Harrison and PAG Ferdinand Banigo and indeed all members of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt for their roles in the actualization of this dream”, he said.
The Benefactor, His Excellency, Ambassador FBI Porbeni mni CFR in his speech said “the Oginigba Community Secondary School is renowned worldwide for academic excellence in science, engineering and the arts notwithstanding that it is a Public School; they need our help, every act of putting smiles on the faces of these students is a sure investment for the future. He however called for a good use and maintenance of the facility.
On his part, commissioner for Education Professor Kaniye Ebeku represented by a director in the ministry, Joy Nwanamaka-Joseph said government will continue to partner with Rotary clubs to improve education in Rivers state. He commended the Rotary club of Port Harcourt for always supporting the state government with developmental structures.
In appreciation, Principal of the Oginigba Community Secondary School, Charity Orlu said the benevolence by Ambassador FBI Porbeni through the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt will ease challenges of congested classrooms and staff rooms. She said the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt has always been coming to aid of the school with projects that encourages learning.
Our correspondent Precious Ahiakwo reports that the Obio-Akpor Local government area Chairman Solomon Abel-Eke promised to equip the new block of class rooms with writing tables and chairs and also mobilize surveillance over the facilities.
