Tricycle operators in Obioakpor have staged a peaceful protest over double taxation and allege Extortion by the council Chairman after the Governor suspended unauthorized taxes.
The state General Secretary of Rivers Drivers Cooperative Union Chukwudi Obulor accused the Chairman Solomon Eke of usurping the functions of the union by forming a committee to take over the work of the union.
He said On the 29th of July 2020 the state governor Nyesom Wike suspended all informal sectors tax on the drivers to cushion the effect of covid19 on taxi, Tricycle and bus Drivers, but that they are astonished that the Chairman introduced a contractor to the union to pay daily hundred naira tracking devices for all drivers . He said putting together the number of Tricycle they have in the state state the chairman will be generating over five hundred million naira yearly from only the tricycle operators.
Some of the Drivers who spoke to correspondent Anita Ogona said they are already facing hardship since the pandemic began the eventual shutdown of all sectors of the economy due to the Lockdown enforced by state governments.
They said they are barely able to make ends meet after the fuel increase coupled with school fees and feeding and other family and personal expenses not to be burden with more tax.
When contacted on the telephone the Obioakpor Chairman Solomon Eke refused to comment on the matter. However the contractor allegedly Contracted by the council Chairman to enforce the daily #100 Collection Bosinde Ariekpo absolved the Obioakpor council chairman Solomon Eke of having any part in the said collection of daily hundred naira.
Bosinde While speaking on the Rythms93.7 FM World News At 6PM on The 7th of October 2020 said the #100 Naira tracker fees was agreed upon with the union executives to help tackle the issues of insecurity that follows KEKE Operations in the state. he said over time the KEKE Operators have been having leadership crisis accompanied with insecurity and loss of lives, and as a security expert he decided to mediate between the KEKE Operators and the council chairman taskforce committee by creating a platform that will enable the Keke operators to have a proper data base to ease the issues of using Keke for different criminal activities.
