In 897 AD, after Pope Formosus died and was buried, the Catholic church exhumed his corpse, wore it in papal vestments, and seated it on a throne to face trial. The verdict was that the deceased had been unworthy to be a pope and was buried again.
Thirteen years later in 910 AD, Formosus’ corpse was exhumed once more, tried, found guilty again, beheaded, and then thrown into the River Tiber in Italy, unworthy of a human burial.
History told us that in the days of the old, that popes were like gods. They controlled every one and everything in Europe. History also told us about a certain pope that was into both man and woman, it also told us that this particular pope was among the most evil being on earth. Catholic as a church have got a very long history
He was guilty, he was stripped of his papal vestments, had three of his fingers cut off and not buried in a catacomb.
I feel his successor was extremely brutal for a verdict to something that felt no pain anymore probably he did it for closure that justice was served. But, I feel back then few popes were in papacy for their pockets, for their families gains amongst side gains.
Thank God we have upright popes now, if we no meet bad popes we no go appreciate good ones when they come in that was during the period of crisis in Roman empire , Pope Formosus body was later recovered and buried in St Peter’s Basilica Rome . Catholic church has some dark histories , they undergone series of transformation and purification , had it been our African traditional religion pass through some changes , transformations and purifications , it would have been better and generally accepted
