Most people celebrate events without making inquiries about the origin or the etymology of its name. people have been piling their mountains of soteriological expectations on how to spend their Val come 14th.
Stop wallowing in ‘pornography’ or misconception of what val is all about !! hilarious but raucous noise and funfare. Though love and valentine are intertwining and interwoven, lets look at who was this St Valentine. Valentine was a third century Roman saint killed in 270AD, exactly 1,750years ago. He was a Catholic priest when a tyrrant, Emperor Claudius Gothicus was governing Rome. Rome was involved in numerous wars and the culture then did not allow married men to go to war. This made the bachelors to start getting married en masse in order to avoid the wars. Due to scarcity of soldiers, Claudius banned marriages and put an order that any priest caught engaging couples would be beheaded. Other priests obeyed except Valentine who was busy organizing secret weddings. He was apprehended and locked in jail. To people’s chagrin, a day before his execution he secretly wedded another couple in jail. What an epitome of love!. He was martyred and buried at a cemetery on the Via Flamina close to Milvian gate north of Rome. However there are several martyrologues added to the later hagiographies that are unreliable. It is worthy to note that the first valentine day was celebrated on February 14, 496AD under Pope Gelasius1, despite numerous chronological chronicles of arguments.
Brothers and sisters valentine doesn’t mean a day of having sexual intercourse and getting drunk. It is not a day only for you and your boy/girl friend alone. A love devoid of any form of nepotism or ethnic chauvinism.
