The Federal Government is set to slash salaries of civil servants and merge agencies with duplicitous functions in its efforts to weather the rough economic storm it is currently facing. The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, stated this in Abuja, said that President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the salaries committee to review payroll and also review the number of agencies. ”the government will weed out unnecessary items from the budget as a move to cut the cost of governance in the country”.
She said ”government had approved a thirteen point eight-eight trillion naira budget with a deficit of over five point six trillion naira and maintained that all agencies should come together to trim their costs amid dwindling revenue.
However The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected plans by the federal government to slash their salaries. describing the declaration by Federal Government as extremely horrendous
Reacting to the statement credited to the Minister of Finance, Budget And National Planning The NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, Said the plan is dead on arrival and tantamount to a “mass suicide”.
He said ‘‘The question is which Salaries is the government planning to slash? It certainly cannot be the meager national minimum wage of N30, 000, salaries which right now cannot even buy a bag of rice” workers are only alive by hair’s breadth, adding that their survival is a miracle.
The NLC president advised the Federal government to cut the humongous remuneration and allowances pocketed by political office holders. stressing that workers generate revenue for the government, and do not constitute any unnecessary cost or burden to governance.
