The Civil Rights Council (CRC) says the ongoing constitutional Review is a charade and efforts in fruitility to divert the attentions of Nigerian away from the plaguing security challenges facing the country.
The National coordinator of civil rights council Arochukwu Paul Ogbonna at a news conference in port Harcourt told our correspondent that since 1999 return of democracy successive government had convened either a political conference or constitutional amendment with recommendations but lack of political will to implement outcomes.
He said Nigeria is in a precarious security situation, mass poverty and misery that gave rise to shades of separatism, embedded in resource control which is born out of the general feeling of alienation and dissatisfaction among the various federal constituents. ‘The body language of the Buhari led administration towards favoring some sector tribe (Fulani) at the expense of the rest of the country has resulted in massive breakdown of law and order particularly as Nigerians begin to see the need to defend their territory against Fulani invasion and possible ploy to grab their land for dominance”
The national coordinator of Civil Rights Council (CRC) Arochukwu Paul also said what would solve Nigerians problems to spare head a Referendum for the creation of a totally new constitution, initiated by Nigerians and acceptable to all the sociopolitical, religious and cultural constituents. he said “Issues around poor policing have aggravated the stability of the nation, rather than the police be agent of peace, protecting lives and properties, by maintaining law and order, the Nigerian police has become a tool for oppressions and agents of destabilization under the Buhari led administration, They have suppressed more citizens who were merely exercising their constitutional rights than even under the military, they have violated citizens rights than any other state coercive apparatus hereby sliding into tyranny”
The CRC Call on the present administration to muster the political will and courage to go down memory lane to implement already preferred solutions instead of allowing the nation to go round in a circles in a journey to nowhere of seasonal constitutional amendments, that way we must have solved one problem and also tackle the culture of constitutional amendments , corruption and bad politics that goes with it.
