A major dilemma in journalism practice has always been the web between objectivity and opinion.
The argument has always been that complete objectivity is not obtainable in journalism practice, as journalists can not be entirely separated form their personal view points despite their averred claims to objectivity.

To address this dilemma the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Rivers State Chapter at a One Day Capacity Building Workshop organized in collaboration with West African Network for Peace Building (WANEP) in Port Harcourt said the choice of the topics of the workshop, ” the role of the media in the implementation of the Rivers State action plan on 1325,” and, ” identifying fake news, facts and the journalist “No description available.

In Her opening remarks the chairperson of Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ Susan Serekara Nwikhana noted that the Topic is very apt considering the importance of information dissemination to peace building or escalation of conflicts in the society and thanked their partners for their commitment towards the promotion of peace in the society, and their recognition of effective communication and information dissemination as panacea for peace.
She said to gain public credibility, reporters are expected to practice what is now popularized as ” journalism of responsibility ” by presenting the facts to the audience to hold their opinion on the presented facts.
Another common feature of our information system today is “fake news”. While the government has identified the dangers of rumor’s and fake news in our collective development as a nation, fake news and rumor’s continue to strive unabated. No description available.
Media scholars and pundits however see fake news and rumor’s in our information system as artificial creations and self palliative on the part of citizenry that is starved of active information and feedback system.
To averred this dwindling trend in our information system governments at all levels are expected to live up to their social responsibilities rather than playing the blame game.
There are also fundamental contradictions over the tendencies of government to control the excesses of the social media as that is perceived as infringement on the fundamental rights of the citizens to freedom of expression.
However, the gate keeping role is essential in the use of the social media to control the flow of information to the public.
To achieve the ideals of sustainable peace and development in the society there is also need for a stronger synergy between the media and government to sift the truth from rumors in public affairs management.
