by Anita Ogona

Some residents of Mile 2 and 3 Diobu, Port Harcourt have accused Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company(PHEDC) of ‘extortion’ in the manner  they bring over estimated bill to energy customers.
One of the resident David Nelson Ordu said the bill brought by the distribution company is outrageous and if the company fail to review their recent policy of disconnecting residents who pay more than half of the huge estimated bill in the guise of underpayment, residents will take legitimate mass action against the PHED.
Another female resident who spoke to our reporter said they do not understand what PHED meant by underpayment as the energy customers are paying for darkness in the first place.
Some another residents hinted that the area is considering peaceful protest to the headquarters of PHED at Moscow road to insist on provision of prepaid meter by PHED to the energy customers as a means of eradicating the estimated and over billing by PHED.
The residents accused PHED of deliberately refusing to provide prepaid meters for residents of Mile 2 and Mile 3 diobu despite several enumeration exercise  as they have done for some areas in Port Harcourt  so that they can continue to ‘extort’ the residents through outrageous bills.
Our correspondent who monitored development in Diobu on Monday reports that PHED came with good numbers of Policemen to disconnect light, including light of compounds that have paid more than half of the estimated bill they issued them on the ground that they under paid.
