The Rivers State Chairman and National Public Relations Officer of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Comr. Nwisabari Sanuel Bani wishes to use this opportunity to express the total displeasure of the youth group in the ban of the outgoing calls of the Nigerian citizens by service providers on the orders of the Federal Government through the Nigerian Communications Commission.
This ban in our view has added to the untold hardship suffered by Nigerians as businesses have been halted due to the inability of business operators and their customers to communicate and transact businesses effectively as they cannot call themselves any longer.
After the long queues experienced at the fuel stations, it is gross insensitivity on the part of government to artificially occasion another round of human clustering at the offices of the communication service providers and the National Identity Management Commission in a country where we are still battling with the curtailment of the covid-19 pandemic.
We hereby call on the Federal Government to order all service providers to immediately rescind their action and unblock all outgoing calls and give Nigerians more time to get registered and link their National Identity Numbers to their lines same way they have extended the continuous voters registration exercise which is seen to be a direct source of benefit to government. We as well call on Government to avail NIMC with all necessary tools to adopt same method adopted by the Independent National Electoral Commission in moving from ward to ward to register citizens.
We also condemn the act of extortion of citizens by officials of NIM-C registration and service providers to register and link citizens’ lines to their NIN. We hereby send this note of warning that any staff caught extorting Nigerians will be seriously dealt with by the council as we have set up a monitoring team to give us report on the awful activities of these staffers in these offices.
Thank you and God bless.
