The African Democratic Congress has labeled the ruling All Progressives Congress a “terrorist organisation” following an alleged gun attack and assassination attempt in Edo State targeting former Governor John Odigie-Oyegun, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Edo governorship candidate Olumide Akpata.
The Edo State Police had earlier confirmed the attacks, which took place both at the party secretariat and at Odigie-Oyegun’s residence.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, and titled ‘Edo Attack: APC Proving To Be A Terrorist Organisation,’ the party condemned the “disturbing gun attack and assassination attempt” and accused the APC of orchestrating a pattern of political intimidation against opposition figures.
“This was not an isolated incident. It bears the unmistakable marks of a dangerous and escalating pattern of political intimidation and terror against our party across the country,” the ADC said.
“The resort to gunfire against lawful political actors represents an act of terrorism against the opposition, which has no place in a constitutional democracy.”
The ADC also accused the state governor, Monday Okpebholo, of making inflammatory remarks that allegedly heightened tensions in the state.
