The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) on May 20, 2024 commenced demolition of shanties and illegal structures, defacing the state capital in efforts to enhance the aesthetic and environmental standards of the Anambra State Capital Awka and its environs.
This exercise was carried at Ifite Awka targeting the removal of illegal shanties and structures constructed under high tension, power lines and in close proximity to residential buildings to provide a safer environment for its residents.
Addressing the residents, the Head of ACTDA Development Control Unit, Mr. Charles Ekwunife urged the affected individuals to construct standard buildings in safer locations, ensuring compliance with urban development regulations and contributing to a safer, more organized Awka.
Mr. Ekwunife noted that prior to the demolition, ACTDA had repeatedly notified shop owners to desist from erecting buildings in these hazardous areas, but regretted that despite these warnings, numerous structures remained, prompting the current demolition exercise.
Mr Ekwunife while disclosing that the cleared space is intended for the proposed establishment of a pipe borne water system, which will serve the community’s needs, insists that ACTDA was paving way for improved infrastructure and a better quality of life for Awka residents.
