A Civil Society Organization, CSO, Congress of Civil Society, Anambra State chapter, gave the State Government a seven-day ultimatum within which to release about 150 suspects allegedly being incarcerated in various detention camps of Udo Ga Achi security outfit scattered all over the state including Awka, the state Capital
Giving the ultimatum, the chapter chairman, comrade Damian Ogudike, added that the government has the option of handing them over to the police within the period under review or it will not hesitate to drag the state government to court over the continued detention without trial adding that it is abuse of human dignity and freedom.
In a petition to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, signed by Ogudike and made available to newsmen, it is titled, “Operation of illegal detention camp set up by Udo Ga Chi,” The petion read in part thus:
“It is with greatest dismay that we petition your good offices over the activities of Udo Ga Achi security outfit . It has no doubt helped to control crime wave in the state to a reasonable extent but they are going against the provisions of the law establishing them and the supreme law of the land, 1999 constitution as amended to such a grave extent that can not be tolerated by well meaning individuals and organizations like ours, hence this petition”
”The security outfit runs a detention camp where it is alleged in viral videos that they have up to 150 detainees in the camp maintained at Awka and others outside Awka, where some have been detained since January 2025 till date”
“We will get across to your good offices the said videos as we doubt if the law setting up the security outfit empowers it to set up a detention camp and also empower her to detain individuals at all, let alone up to five months in her camp without handling over to the. Police”
“We believe you are not aware of the illegality and human right abuse being orchestrated by the security outfit and you have a duty as the Chief Security Officer of the state to call them to order and ensure justice is served on them”.
The petition copied the state commissioner of Police, Director of State Security Services, DSS and Attorney General and the Commissioner for Justice
