The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old suspect, Chimaobi Mbonu, allegedly linked to a kidnapping gang responsible for the abduction and murder of Mr. George Onwurah in May 2024.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was apprehended on Thursday by police operatives attached to the Awgbu Divisional Headquarters, with the support of local residents.
The arrest took place in Ndiukwuenu Village.
located in the Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Chimaobl, along with other members of the gang who are still at large, allegedly kidnapped Mr. Onwurah, collected ransom from his family, and subsequently tortured him to death.
Ikenga further disclosed that the same criminal gang is suspected of vandalizing the Community Health Care Centre in the area, where they reportedly stole electrical materials and other valuable items.
He added that the police have intensified efforts and operational plans are underway to apprehend the remaining members of the gang currently on the run.
