Anambra State House of Assembly Moves to Review Suspension of Lawmaker

The Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze has directed the House Committee on Rules, Ethics and Privileges to review the suspension of Hon. Barnard Udemezue, member representing Ayamelum Constituency.

Speaking during plenary on Tuesday, February 17, Rt. Hon. Udeze tasked the Committee, chaired by the Majority Leader, Ikenna Ofodeme, to urgently re-examine the matter in line with the House resolution and report back to the Assembly on the next adjourned date.

Hon. Udemezue was suspended following a resolution of the House on August 28, 2025, after the consideration of a report by the Committee on Ethics and Privileges which indicted him of alleged unparliamentary conduct.

Subsequently, the lawmaker was handed an additional three-months suspension for failing to comply with the initial directives of the House. The extended suspension, which commenced on November 26, 2025, is scheduled to lapse on February 26, 2026.

The Speaker noted that the suspension remains subject to review by the Committee, which is expected to assess the level of compliance by Hon. Udemezue with the resolutions of the House before making its recommendations.

The House later adjourned plenary to Thursday, February 19, 2026.
