The National Executive Committee, NEC, of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC has concluded its national delegates conference in Abuja, with the Congress unanimously named Joe Ajaero as its new president.
Ajaero who was a former Deputy President, emerged as successor to Ayuba Wabba, whose eight-year tenure ended yesterday.
Ajaero was a sole candidate for the office of the NLC president. Prior to now, he had served as the General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE). He was also a member of the Presidential Committee on Power Sector Reforms, set up by the late ex-President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
It would be recalled that Wabba was first elected in 2015 and later re-elected in 2019 for his second term. He however completed his tenure yesterday during the 13th quadrennial national delegates conference in Abuja
During his farewell speech while commissioning a guest house project, named after Comrade Hassan Sunmonu, the foremost President of the NLC, Wabba said “unionism was not only about contestations and agitations but also, resource management and investment”
In his own submission, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, noted that President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration was committed to improving the minimum wage of workers to boost productivity.
Mustapha, the special guest of honour at the conference, said the federal government was concerned about improving the welfare of public service, noting that the edifice was a delight for the NLC as well as its workers.
All the noticeable achievements and legacies, Mustapha noted, are for the Nigerian masses, even as he lauded the ex-NLC President, Wabba for constructing such edifice that would yield additional income to the Congress.
