Civil Society Group Takes Protest To Govt House, Demand Restoration Of Democracy In Rivers State

Open letter to Mr.President,

RESTORE DEMOCRATIC RULE IN RIVERS STATE
Pilex Centre For Civic Education Initiative -The Peoples Advocates, Kebetkache
Women Development &Resource Centre,WRAPA and CONCERNED CIVIL SOCIETY
ORGANIZATIONS are Non-Governmental Organizations in Nigeria.
June 12,1993 is positively significant because Nigerian Electoral Body conducted
free and fair election in which M.K.O Abiola emerged winner.Only recently,
Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida revealed the truth about June 12 and apologized to
Nigerians.
June 12 evokes pain and anger because the said free and fair election was annulled
and the will of the people dashed into the trash.
March 18,2025,evokes the same pain and anger because the President acted
beyond his constitutional powers when he suspended democracy in Rivers State.
The case of A.G Federation v A.G Lagos State, The Supreme Court of Nigeria stated
that the president doesn’t have the power to remove an elected Governor.

AS CONCERNED CIVIL SOCIETY
ORGANIZATIONS:
We further argue that unlike Benue State and Plateau State,Rivers State had not
degenerated to break-down of law and order or war to necessitate the declaration
of State of Emergency.
It is our position in line with relevant sections of the Nigerian Constitution that only
an elected Governor can appoint RSIEC board/Chairman and only an elected
Governor can conduct Local Government Elections. As such, the people of Rivers
State and Nigeria will boycott any attempt for any other authority whatsoever to
conduct the said election illegally.
In-order to end this reign of impunity and dictatorship, and avoid a regrettable
legacy like IBB,
The Peoples Advocates,call on Mr.President to;
1.RESTORE DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT IN RIVERS STATE TODAY JUNE 18,
2025 by making an executive declaration recalling the Governor of Rivers
State Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly.
2.Direct the National Assembly to amend S.60 (5)of the Electoral Act 2022 to
make electronic transmission of results from the polling units mandatory by
expunging the sentence”as prescribed by INEC/THE COMMISSION”and
stating that results not transmitted as such shall be declared invalid.
3.Direct the National Assembly to amend S.51 of the Electoral Act 2022 to add
that votes shall be declared invalid in any polling unit where ballot boxes are
snatched and/or grievous violence occurs that stops the polls and a rerun
conducted in such units if it will affect the outcome of the election,
