The Federal High Court sitting in Awka, Anambra State has declared the appointment and continued stay of the Inspector-General of Police (Alkali) as unlawful and unconstitutional.
The court gave the ruling on Friday stating that his continuous stay in office is against the clear provisions of the Police Act, 2020.The Court further held that only an officer within the listed rank, with four (4) years in service, can be appointed as IGP, not one with less than four (4) years.
Recall that human rights lawyers, Maxwell Opara, and Festus Ogun, had also dragged the Inspectors General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, and President Muhammadu Buhari to court for Alkali’s continuous stay in office after his retirement
.Alkali Baba clocked 60 on March 1, 2023.Buhari in January extended the Alkali’s tenure, knowing fully well that he is to clock 60 years which is the compulsory year for retirement.
