An operative of the Department of State Services (DSS) attached to the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), has been shot dead after armed terrorists ambushed the convoy of Dr. Kingsley Achigbu along the Okigwe-Umuna axis of the Owerri-Okigwe highway.
According to a reliable family source who spoke with Vanguard, the incident occurred last Saturday as Dr. Achigbu’s family was returning home from Enugu.
“They ran into a siege laid by some armed terrorists, along the Okigwe-Umuna end of the ever-busy Owerri-Okigwe highway,” the source said.
The assailants reportedly opened fire on the convoy, flattening the tyres of the Hilux escort vehicle and forcing its occupants, including police officers and the CMD’s family members, to flee into nearby bushes with varying degrees of injuries.
The terrorists, having failed to capture the vehicle’s occupants, returned to the disabled Hilux and set it ablaze.
“One out of the three injured police officers was immediately wheeled into the hospital for an emergency surgery,” the source disclosed.
The Hilux driver, identified only as Austine, who was initially unaccounted for, has since rejoined the family. Reports also indicate that all security personnel managed to escape with their rifles intact.
Upon receiving news of the attack, additional armed security personnel were dispatched to the scene. They located the injured police officers and moved them to a hospital for treatment.
At the time of filing this report, no official statement has been issued by the police, DSS, or FUTO management regarding the incident.
