Ebonyi Police Foil Kidnap Attempt, Kill Two Suspected Robbers In Gun Battle

The operation, which took place within the Iyonu/Idodo Forest axis, followed credible intelligence on the movement and activities of a criminal gang reportedly responsible for a series of violent attacks and robberies in the area.

Confirming the development in a statement on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, said the suspects opened fire on operatives upon sighting them, prompting a heavy exchange of gunfire.

“At the end of the encounter, two of the suspects were neutralised,” Ukandu stated.

He added that items recovered from the scene included one AK-47 rifle, two locally made Dane guns, 20 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and five live cartridges.

In a separate operation, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit successfully foiled a kidnap attempt targeting the mother of a prominent individual in Isata community, Isu Onicha Local Government Area.

Ukandu disclosed that three suspects were arrested during the operation, while one managed to escape.

“A locally made single-barrel gun was recovered from the kidnap suspects,” he said, adding that the arrested persons would be charged to court upon completion of investigations.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Adaku Uche-Anya, commended the operatives for their professionalism and swift response, assuring residents that the Command remains resolute in its fight against violent crime.

“We will not relent in our efforts to rid Ebonyi State of criminals and their networks,” she said. “We urge residents to continue providing timely and credible information that can help security agencies protect lives and property.”

The latest operations underscore the Command’s renewed drive to restore public confidence and reinforce security presence across volatile areas of the state
