Chairman of the Commercial Drivers’ Welfare Association in Rivers State, Christopher Ezeali, has raised concerns over rising attacks and harassment of commercial drivers in Port Harcourt, as well as multiple taxation that is making life increasingly difficult for drivers.
Ezeali, who spoke to our Correspondent, stressed that enforcement of traffic offences is the duty of the police and not civilians, accusing non-state actors of exploiting the system to enrich themselves.
He said such activities not only burden drivers but also damage the image of the Rivers State Government.
The chairman therefore called for an immediate end to the practice and urged local authorities to emulate Abia and Enugu governments in tackling illegal taxation and vehicle seizures.
