A mild drama turned bloody in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, when an ex-convict reportedly went berserk and stabbed a police officer over an alleged romantic affair with his wife.
The shocking incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday in the Adatan area of the city, throwing residents into confusion as the suspect, identified simply as Tunde, allegedly attacked the officer with a sharp knife during a heated confrontation.
According to eyewitnesses, the ex-convict had trailed the officer, who is attached to the Ogun State Police Command, after suspecting him of having an affair with his wife. On sighting the policeman, Tunde allegedly pounced on him with a knife, inflicting deep cuts on his neck and shoulder before he was overpowered by bystanders.
The injured officer was said to have been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where he is currently receiving treatment, while the suspect has been taken into custody.
Confirming the incident, a source at the police command said the suspect would face fresh charges of attempted murder and assaulting a law enforcement officer.
The source added that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack, including the alleged affair that triggered the violence.
Residents have since condemned the act, calling on authorities to ensure justice is served while urging couples to resolve domestic disputes peacefully.
