Ghana President Announces Plan For Visa-Free Entry For All Africans Starting May 25

The minister further stated that President Mahama made the declaration during the inaugural State Visit of Zimbabwean leader, Emmerson Mnangagwa, to Ghana.

The Government of Ghana has announced plans to introduce a free visa regime for all Africans seeking to visit the country, in a major step toward strengthening continental unity and economic integration.

The development was disclosed on Thursday in a statement issued on X (formerly Twitter) by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa.

“President John Mahama has today announced that the Government of Ghana has decided to introduce a free visa regime for all Africans who wish to visit Ghana,” the minister stated.

Ablakwa added, “The new policy takes effect on May 25, a day which is commemorated as Africa Day.”

The minister further stated that President Mahama made the declaration during the inaugural State Visit of Zimbabwean leader, Emmerson Mnangagwa, to Ghana.

Highlighting the significance of the move, Ablakwa said, “Ghana seeks to consolidate its credentials as the cradle of Pan-Africanism even as it expects a major boost in tourism and intra-African trade by this groundbreaking reform.”

He also noted, “The Free Visa for Africans would be a component of a new e-Visa policy the Mahama Administration is launching next month.”

The minister added that President Mahama had reassured that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would sustain its efforts in expanding visa-free access for Ghanaian citizens globally.

“President Mahama also assured that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would continue with its intentional and determined effort at securing more Visa Waiver Agreements for Ghanaian passport holders,” he said.

Providing further details, the minister disclosed that since 2025, 23 Visa Waiver Agreements have been negotiated for Ghanaians.
