Governor Diri Resignation From PDP Is Embarrassing– Wike Explains Why

Former governor Nyesom Wike has described governor Duoye Diri’s resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as “very embarrassing”.

Nyesom Wike made the remark during his media chat on Friday, October 24th, 2025. In his response to a question about the political developments in the country, particularly PDP governors abandoning their political their party for the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), Nyesom Wike stated that he is not surprised that PDP governors are joining the APC. He reiterated his earlier stance on the current national leadership of the PDP. According to him, the current national leadership of the PDP are ignorant, self-centered and determined to destroy the party through their poor leadership.

Speaking particularly about governor Duoye Diri’s resignation from PDP, Nyesom Wike noted that the Bayelsa state governor was the chairman of the PDP committee on zoning of the party’s elective positions ahead of its slated November convention in Oyo state. He said Diri’s while occupying such an important position in the party and resigning his membership to the party, is demeaning to the party’s reputation and is a piece of evidence of how the party has lost its glory.

Nyesom Wike also stated the Bayelsa state governor was pretending as he was not committed to the PDP even before his resignation. Wike said Diri chairing the committee on zoning of elective position, was part of script against his interest in the party– a political game he was not oblivious of.

Though governor Duoye Diri resigned his membership to PDP on the 15th of October, 2025, about two weeks after, the governor is yet to announce his new political party.

Like his counterparts who recently left the PDP, governor Diri is linked to joining the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC). According to speculations on social media, the governor is currently liaising with leadership of the APC in Bayelsa state and would announce his defection to the APC after reaching an agreement on power sharing with party’s leadership in Bayelsa state.
