Unknown gunmen have killed the traditional ruler of Ishinkwor community, Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, HRH Jesophat Ikegwu.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night in the monarch’s palace.
Sources in the community said that the gunmen invaded Ikegwu’s palace and shot him through the window.
Chairman of the local government, Ikechukwu Ogbofia, who confirmed the killing, condemned the incident.
He said the police are investigating the killing and urged the people of the community to remain calm.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of Ebonyi Command, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident.
Ikegwu’s killing brings the total number of monarchs killed in the state to five.
Last month, the traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike community, Ikwo Local Government Area, was killed after he was abducted. His body was set ablaze by his killers.
About nine suspects were arrested in connection to the crime but nothing has been heard about them
