A postgraduate student pursuing her Ph.D. at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has reportedly been kidnapped during an early morning jog within the university premises, raising serious concerns about campus security.
The incident came to light through a post made by a user identified as @theoriaku on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter), who disclosed that the abducted student is a personal friend. He explained that she was taken by unknown assailants while on her routine morning exercise within the UNN campus, a place typically regarded as a secure environment for students.
“A friend of mine and a postgraduate student (Ph.D.) of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka is currently missing. She was kidnapped this morning while jogging on campus,” he wrote.
₦10 Million Ransom Demanded
In a disturbing twist, the alleged kidnappers have reportedly reached out to the victim’s close contacts and are demanding a ransom of ₦10 million for her safe release. The situation has since sent shockwaves through the university community and the wider academic circle.
@theoriaku further alleged that the school authorities have shown little urgency or seriousness in addressing the situation.
“We’ve involved school security, but they seem indifferent about the entire case. Meanwhile, the kidnappers are demanding ₦10 million. Her personal details are attached to the earlier post. Any useful information would be appreciated,” he added.
Silence from Authorities Raises Concerns
As of the time this report was filed, neither the University of Nigeria, Nsukka nor any security agency has issued an official statement confirming or denying the incident. The lack of a formal response has sparked outrage on social media, with many users criticizing the school’s security architecture and calling for immediate action.
Several users online have also demanded greater accountability and transparency from the institution, noting that if a Ph.D. student can be abducted in broad daylight within campus grounds, it raises deeper questions about the safety of all students and staff.
Growing Insecurity in Academic Institutions
This incident is one of several in recent times that highlight the rising insecurity within and around educational institutions in Nigeria. From kidnapping to cult violence and assaults, students in various parts of the country continue to face threats that compromise their right to a safe learning environment.
Calls are mounting for the Nigerian Police, campus security, and the Federal Ministry of Education to intervene promptly and prevent further deterioration of safety in Nigeria’s academic institutions.
