A tragic story has emerged from Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State, where a young girl reportedly took her own life after being forced into marriage by her father.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, 2025. The girl, said to be under severe emotional distress, ended her life after her family insisted she marry one of her father’s friends against her will.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed the heartbreaking event, noting that the young woman had struggled with intense pressure from her family over the arranged marriage.
A child protection volunteer, Bukar Fantami Gubio, also confirmed the incident and described it as “deeply unfortunate and heartbreaking.”
He explained that the deceased had clearly stated her unwillingness to marry the man chosen by her father, as she was already in love with another person.
“The emotional pain and pressure she went through as a result of this forced marriage pushed her into taking her own life. It is truly a sad situation that calls for urgent action,” Gubio said.
He urged human rights groups, law enforcement agencies, and other relevant authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure that justice is served.
Gubio also appealed to parents and community leaders to respect the choices of young women in marriage matters, emphasizing that forced marriages are serious violations of human rights.
“This tragedy is a reminder of the urgent need to protect the rights, freedom, and dignity of young women against all forms of abuse and coercion,” he added.
As of the time of this report, the police and the Borno State government had not released any official statement regarding the incident.
