In a heartbreaking incident in Lagos, Nigeria, a man lost his life in a stampede at the Nigerian Customs office while attempting to purchase rice at a discounted rate.

The victim, whose identity remains unknown, was in line with his wife when he tragically fell and was unable to rise before being trampled by the crowd.

A medical professional, Dr. Adunola, revealed that the man succumbed to his injuries at her hospital. She expressed her sorrow over the incident, noting that the man left behind very young children.

This unfortunate event occurred amidst a chaotic scene at the Customs office in the Yaba area of Lagos, where an estimated 10,000 people had gathered to buy rice.

The situation was exacerbated by the preferential treatment of uniformed officers from various forces, leading to frustration and anger among the general public.

Reports from the scene describe a highly distressing environment, with physical violence and disregard for the safety and dignity of those present.

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) announced its intention to distribute confiscated food products nationwide to address the current economic hardships and the escalating prices of basic food items. While the initiative aims to alleviate food insecurity, the tragic outcome of this distribution event highlights the critical need for effective crowd control measures and equitable treatment of all citizens.
