NAWOJ Calls for Inclusive, Transparent and Gender-Responsive Amendments to the Electoral Act

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has closely followed the ongoing national discourse surrounding the proposed amendments to the Electoral Act 2022.

As a professional body committed to democracy, accountability, and the advancement of women and children, NAWOJ believes that electoral reform is not merely a legislative exercise, but a defining moment for Nigeria’s democratic future.

NAWOJ therefore states as follows:

  1. Transparency and Credibility Must Be Strengthened

Any amendment to the Electoral Act must enhance, not diminish, public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process. NAWOJ supports reforms that:

Guarantee clear legal backing for electronic transmission of election results;

Strengthen technological innovations that improve transparency;

Eliminate ambiguities that could undermine electoral integrity.

  1. Women’s Political Participation Must Be Prioritized

Despite constituting nearly half of Nigeria’s population, women remain significantly underrepresented in elective positions. NAWOJ calls for:

Legislative measures that promote affirmative action and gender inclusion;

Reduction of structural and financial barriers that limit women’s candidacy;

Stronger protections against electoral violence, intimidation, and harassment, particularly those targeting women candidates and journalists.

  1. Protection of Journalists and Media Freedom

The media plays a central role in safeguarding democracy. NAWOJ urges that electoral reforms incorporate safeguards that ensure:

The safety of journalists covering elections;

Access to information and transparency from electoral authorities;

Accountability for attacks on media professionals during election cycles.

  1. Restoration of Public Trust

Recent public conversations reflect both high civic interest and lingering concerns about institutional trust. Electoral reforms must therefore be people-centered, transparent, and subject to meaningful stakeholder consultation.

NAWOJ emphasizes that credible elections are foundational to peace, national development, and social stability. A reform process that strengthens integrity and inclusiveness will reinforce Nigeria’s democratic standing both locally and internationally.

The Association urges the National Assembly and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the ongoing amendment process reflects the aspirations of Nigerians for free, fair, inclusive, and credible elections.

NAWOJ remains committed to educating citizens, amplifying women’s voices, and supporting responsible media engagement in the electoral reform process.
