The Peoples Democratic Party has unveiled a special legal team to challenge the outcome of the February 21, 2026 Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory.
The party made this known on Sunday, shortly after results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission showed that the All Progressives Congress won chairmanship seats in Abaji, Kwali, AMAC, and Bwari, while the PDP secured victory only in Gwagwalada.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the PDP congratulated its winning candidates, especially Mohammed Kasim, who emerged as Chairman elect of Gwagwalada Area Council.
The party admitted that the number of victories recorded was lower than it had hoped but described the win as important, considering what it called intimidation and irregularities during the polls.
According to the statement, there are reports and video evidence alleging that armed security personnel carted away result sheets from polling units and intimidated voters.
To handle petitions and complaints arising from the election, the PDP appointed a legal team led by its National Legal Adviser, Shafi Bara’u. The party urged aggrieved candidates to contact the legal team quickly to avoid missing deadlines for filing petitions.
The PDP also blamed low voter turnout on what it described as an anti-people Electoral Act 2026, warning that the FCT council elections may reflect what could happen in the 2027 general elections if urgent reforms are not made.
The party called on the National Assembly and the President to take steps to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.
