In a move that may reshape the dynamics of Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, former presidential candidate Peter Obi is reportedly set to dump the Labour Party (LP), bringing an end to his high-profile journey with the party.
Sources close to the former Anambra State governor revealed that Obi, fondly called “Okute” by supporters, is preparing to pursue his political ambitions through a new platform—one more aligned with his vision and ideals.
“LP, as currently constituted—despite the Supreme Court’s recent ruling—can no longer accommodate Peter Obi, his supporters, and his presidential ambition,” the source said.
Obi’s relationship with the party has grown increasingly strained over internal divisions, allegations of lack of transparency, and a leadership crisis that many believe has weakened the party’s national appeal.
Peter Obi joined the Labour Party in May 2022, just days before the presidential primaries, and became the face of a youth-driven political movement popularly dubbed the “Obidients” movement. His 2023 presidential campaign shook the foundations of Nigeria’s traditional party politics, finishing third behind the APC and PDP in one of the most competitive elections in the country’s history
