The Rivers State Internal Revenue Service (RIRS) has announced a two-week extension for the filing of annual personal income tax returns, providing taxpayers across the state with additional time to fulfill their statutory obligations.
In a public notice dated April 1, 2026, and signed by the Executive Chairman, Sir Israel O. Egbunefu, the Service confirmed that the deadline for submitting 2025 Year of Assessment returns has been extended to April 17, 2026.
According to the RIRS, the decision by its Executive Management is aimed at improving compliance and giving individuals and businesses who are yet to file their returns ample opportunity to do so without undue pressure.
The Service emphasized that all taxable persons including employees in both the public and private sectors, self-employed individuals, business owners, and professionals are expected to take advantage of the extension to meet their obligations in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act.
Taxpayers are advised to complete and submit their returns via the official RIRS online portal at:

Taxpayers are encouraged to complete and submit their returns through the official RIRS platforms to ensure a smooth and efficient process.
While the extension provides temporary relief, the agency warned that failure to comply within the revised deadline may attract penalties as stipulated by law.
The RIRS also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting taxpayers, urging residents to seek assistance through its offices or official communication channels for guidance on the filing process.
The move underscores the Service’s continued drive to strengthen tax compliance and boost internally generated revenue, a key pillar for sustainable development in Rivers State.
